After the fantastic sequel, Underworld: Evolution, the latter installments have varying degrees of success. Our heroine is Selene ( Kate Beckinsale), an assassin who has a particular vendetta against the lycans and finds her world upended when she crosses paths with a human ( Scott Speedman) who is being hunted for his blood.
The five-film series centers on an ancient war between vampires and lycans (werewolves) and the power struggles that arise between the feuding clans. Though the popularity of the action sub-genre has somewhat faded since its heyday, Underworld is one franchise that has proven to have some staying power. Dark action films like Underworld, Van Helsing, Daybreakers, and I, Frankenstein share attributes so ingrained into their DNA that it's hard to imagine them without their stylized action, Gothic visuals, and dark mood. There used to be a time when you could barely step into a theater without seeing a poster or trailer featuring a brooding hero (or heroine) in a black leather trench coat beneath an ominous moonlit sky.
